The 2009 Leland Under The Lights car show had a totally new feel than in years past. In the past, the show has been the first Saturday in August at the Wal-Mart Shopping Center. This year the North Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce moved across Hwy 17 to the new shopping center that holds a Papa John’s Pizza, a Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q, and a La Costa Mexican Restaurant. Needless to say, no one went hungry.
The milder temperatures attracted classic vehicles of all types, including Carl’s 1923 Ford Pickup pictured above. The Leland resident ran out of room on the window card listing all the trick features on this hot rod. The ’23 is powered by a 2003 Baja Boat 6.2 liter Mercruiser engine, breathing through a cross ram intake manifold and dual carburetor setup that had been in storage for 40 years. The 415 horse power producing combination moves the body that has been stretched 12 inches and sits on a homemade frame through a Tarentola Hydro manual shift 350 transmission. A Speedway Engineering quick change rear end out back turning the big Hoosier Racing tires, and reversed Corvair steering with sprint car steering arms out front, anchor the four disc brake calipers.
The new location had plenty of parking for participants, spectators, and classic car enthusiasts who cruised just to check it out. There were several car’s worth checking out that were mixed in with the daily drivers. Carsolina thanks the North Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce for putting on a wonderful classic car event.
